If you wait until your baby has been asleep for roughly 20 minutes — long enough to shift from active light sleep into deeper sleep — the transfer becomes significantly easier. For older babies, the better long-term approach is to put them down before they're fully asleep so there's no transfer to manage at all.
Practise putting your baby down drowsy but awake. This is the single most effective strategy for ending the transfer wake cycle. The idea is to lower your baby into the crib when they're relaxed, heavy-eyed, and slowing down — but still aware that they're being placed down. When babies learn to complete the final step of falling asleep in their sleep space, the whole transfer problem dissolves because there's nothing to transfer. The drowsy but awake technique takes practice and patience, but it's the foundation of independent sleep.
Swaddle young babies to dampen the startle reflex.
